HUNGER ERADICATION WITH TECHNOLOGY

Technology increases the speed of eradication of hunger all around the world. This blog shows you how, so stay till the end to know in an elaborated manner.

We're educating people on who are food insecure. There are many TV commercials, billboards and massive donations, the engagement of big celebrities, but the ever-present sad reality is that millions of people are still going hungry. There are about 821 million people who don't get enough food i.e. 1 in 8 people on the planet. Yet we are wasting more food than ever before, An estimated 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted annually i.e. one-third of all food produced for human consumption, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). 27% of our landfills is food waste, that rot and produce methane gas that is harmful to the environment. There is this big social inequality between people who really need food and cannot get it and the people who have too much and simply throw it away.

This shows us that HUNGER IS NOT A ISSUE OF SCARCITY BUT RATHER A MATTER OF LOGISTICS.

Then here the technology shows up to end Hunger...

In 2016, France became the very first country to ban supermarkets from throwing unused food. Instead, they must donate it and they are fined if they don't. Then other counties also later brought in policies on this. When we think of how technology and innovation have to change our lives like food delivery,  viewing entertainment, its amazing that we haven't solved hunger yet. We literally have cars that can drive themselves and millions of people that cannot feed themselves.

To solve big issues like world hunger, we need everybody to the table. We need data people from humanitarian organizations leading the way, and orchestrating just the rich types of engagement with academics, governments and companies.

You might be wondering COMPANIES???

Yes, companies have a major role to play in fixing the big problems in our world. There are things that companies can do and they aren't doing.

Companies can do these 3 things,

1.Donate data    2. donate decision scientists and   3. donating technology to gather new sources data.

This is called  DATA PHILANTHROPY, and this is the future of corporate social responsibility.

There are more important insights just locked away in company data, and one needs to be very careful in respecting privacy concerns by anonymising the data.

Even if all the major companies start donating their data, we need decision scientists to unlock those insights. They take this data, clean it up and put it into a useful algorithm, and that's the best choice to address the business need at hand. In the world of humanitarian aid, there are very few decision scientists and most of them work for companies.

When it comes to using data to make operational changes, Its an investment, it requires patience but the types of results that can be produced are undeniable.

Information visibility drives efficiency. For companies using technology to gather important data, and it led to major operational efficiency improvements. Data drives better decisions. Companies that are engaging in data philanthropy, they are finding new insights that are locked away in their data.

For example, take a credit card company that opened up a centre that functions as a hub for academics, for NGOs and governments all working together. They are looking for information in credit card swipes using that to find out how household lives, work, earn and spend. For the humanitarian world, this provides information about how one might bring people out of poverty. For the companies, it provides information about their customers and potential customers. It is a win-win all around.

Data philanthropy can revolutionize the humanitarian world, if we coordinated the planning and logistics across all of the major facets of humanitarian operations, we could feed hundreds of thousands of people.

IF WE SOLVE HUNGER WE HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE AND EVERYTHING TO GAIN.
